Busy month for Jim VanCleve: studio, Scotland, workshop

Jim VanCleve, fiddler with Mountain Heart, has had quite a busy 2010 so far. As related in our recent communications, it appears that there is no rest in sight. But Jim wouldn't have it any other way. In addition to recording demos for the next Mountain Heart album in January, and touring with the band, [...]

Josh Shilling – blogging for D’Addario

Josh Shilling, lead singer and multi-instrumentalist for bluegrass bad boys Mountain Heart, is launching a new blog series for D'Addario. The blog will be a behind-the-scene look at life on the road with Mountain Heart. This is a fun-loving bunch of guys, so you can expect a measure of zaniness in his reports. Here's Josh's [...]

Mountain Heart with Michael Cleveland on The Opry

Here's a New Years "good news/bad news" for you... Mountain Heart has been looking forward to their New Years Day performance on The Grand Ole Opry for some time. Just a day before their appearance comes word that fiddler Jim VanCleve is caught in a snowstorm in Pennsylvania, and isn't likely to make it back [...]

Mountain Heart = torture?

Regular readers of Bluegrass Today know that one of my favorite web sites is The Bluegrass Intelligencer, brainchild of Crooked Still banjo wizard Greg Liszt. Its theme is "fake" bluegrass and acoustic music news, and the site is plainly hilarious, if occasionally a bit on the bawdy side. The Still has been recording of late, [...]

Merry Christmas from Mountain Heart

It's that time of year in the bluegrass world... Touring acts are finishing their live shows for the year and looking forward to spending time with their families. In the case of Mountain Heart, it's also silly season, as evidenced by their official Christmas greeting for 2009. They have created a customized video using the [...]

Merry Christmas from Mountain Heart and Cindy Baucom

Cindy Baucom has put the finishing touches on her Knee-Deep In Bluegrass Christmas Special, offered free of charge - and commercial free - to any radio station looking to add some great acoustic holiday programming during the Christmas season. It will be available for broadcast between December 11-25, and can either be downloaded or delivered [...]

Bass Strummit in 2010

We posted yesterday about ResoSummit, a three-day clinic for resophonic guitarists. Similar events for banjo, fiddle, mandolin and guitar have been held for years but co-host Rob Ickes felt the need to create something for his reso-buddies as well. Also neglected in this area are upright bass players, the unsung heroes of the bluegrass band. [...]

Mountain Heart Martinsville video

Here's video of the Mountain Heart performance of The Star Spangled Banner before the NASCAR race last Sunday at the Martinsville Speedway. Their appearance was broadcast nationally via ABC sports. Nice job, guys!

More Mountain Heart at Martinsville

Here are a few more photos of Mountain Heart's big day at the Martinsville Speedway this past Sunday. They had been invited to sing the National Anthem before the race, which was carried live on ABC television. Their rendition featured Josh Shilling as the primary vocalist, with the rest of the members providing harmony on [...]

Mountain Heart at Martinsville

Mountain Heart sent along a few photos of pre-race activities at Martinsville Speedway, where the guys will soon be singing the National Anthem before the start of today's (10/25) NASCAR TUMS Fast Relief 500. The race starts at 1:30 p.m. (EDT), and they are scheduled to sing at roughly 1:25. Coverage is on ABC television. [...]
