Ian Lane – fiddler on the move

There are many up and coming young bluegrass musicians in Florida, and one of those worth mentioning is Ian Lane.

His musical journey began with Christmas in 2019 when 13-year-old Ian received a fiddle. As we all know, the pandemic struck in early 2020.

Ian puts it this way…

“I had lots of spare time on my hands to learn how to play fiddle. Early on I was mostly self-taught and learned primarily by ear or by watching videos. By late 2020 I felt confident enough to start playing with other musicians at local jams and festivals. I quickly learned many new techniques, and have been truly blessed to meet an outstanding group of musicians that have helped me tremendously as my playing has progressed.”

One of Florida’s premier musicians, Keith Bass, made Ian a part of the Florida Bluegrass Express. Ian says that Keith is his mentor and is convinced that his mentorship led to Ian appearing twice on the Grand Ole Opry at 17 years of age.

Keith encouraged Ian to start his own band. Thus, Ian Lane & Southern Flavor was born. Ian and Keith both play in Keith’s band, and in Southern Flavor. Both are now Florida favorites.

Southern Flavor is a five-piece group. Brothers Tippen and Alton Padgett play guitar and mandolin, respectively. Both are excellent vocalists. Rex Putnam is the bass player. Keith is the banjo player, and Ian is the fiddler.

Southern Flavor brings high energy to the stage. There is a bit of brotherly banter that provides good laughs.

This is one of the young, new groups in bluegrass. See them if you can.
