Jamgrass heroes Yonder Mountain String Band have a new single, released in conjunction with the announcement of their next album, Good As True, their 12th, set so hit March 27 on Thirty Tigers.
Last week the group dropped Brand New Heartache, listed as a band composition, with particular credit to banjo man Dave Johnston and mandolinist Nick Piccininni. It tells of the loss of a romantic partner, and the feeling of grief and new possibilities that gradually shifts from one to the other over time.
Also featured on the track are Johnston’s fellow founding members Adam Aijala on guitar and Ben Kauffman on bass, along with fiddler Coleman Smith.
A lot of bluegrass lovers think everything on the jamgrass side is the farthest thing from the bluegrass they love, and while that isn’t even true in general, it certainly isn’t so of these guys. It is a contemporary sound, but sitting right in a bluegrass groove.

Brand New Heartache is available now from popular download and streaming services online. Pre-orders and pre-saves for the Good As True album are likewise enabled.
