A progressive bluegrass quartet hailing from Denver, Colorado, Magoo are set to release an album that effectively sets the tone for both their attitude and their aptitude. The ten songs contained on What A Life affirm the fact that the optimism is indeed justified, and given the confidence and creativity evidenced at the outset, it’s clear that the band have the skills necessary to make a most emphatic impression.
Indeed, each of the band members bring expertise to the effort overall. Dobro player Dylan Flynn was the recent winner of the 2024 RockyGrass Dobro Competition, while guitarist Erik Hill reaped runner-up status in the RockyGrass Flatpicking Contest. Mandolin player Courtlyn Bills and bassist Denton Turner add their individual abilities to the mix as well. The efforts paid off courtesy of Magoo’s first place win at the UllrGrass Band Competition and at the Clash of the Strings event, each in addition to their second place win at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival Band Competition. A steady succession of festival appearances have followed, underscoring both their agility and creativity.
Happily then, What A Life further fuels their rising reputation. The band’s instrumental prowess is immediately evident as the a cappella opening of Ohio Blues gives way to the gentle tones and earnest optimism that follows. Can’t You Hear That Train, the upbeat instrumental Rippin’ Richard and the extended flourishes within The Road and Big Fall spotlight some rapid-fire revelry, while the celebratory sound of Clarity ensures that the merry mood remains unabated.
The elation becomes even more evident as the proceedings progress. Angel of Telluride, an ode to that magical mountain domain allows Sam Bush — widely proclaimed as “The King of Telluride” — to share in the praise for his kingdom courtesy of a masterful mandolin contribution. By the time the album comes to its conclusion with the joyful jubilation of This Road’s Been Good To Me, and the title tune, it’s clear Magoo remains mighty grateful for the opportunity they’ve been given while sharing their skills.
Indeed, their enthusiasm is clearly contagious.
What A Life is set for a February 27 release.
