Spinsters, a new independent feature film in post-production with a screenplay by Sasha Carrera, was shot entirely in Frederick, MD, and uses a number of well-known bluegrass players on screen.
It’s a story about two middle-aged women, best friends but now estranged, whose lives never seemed to take off. Both are in jobs that are taking them nowhere, and are dealing with aging parents and their issues. So they decide together to try a different tack and see what happens.
Carrera also stars in the film, and has written a number of new bluegrass songs that will be in the movie, which Rahel Grunder directed.
We haven’t been able to get a wealth of details at this point, but do know that mandolinist David Propst, formerly with The Country Gentlemen Show and now with Bluetrain, Mike Munford, long time banjo player with Frank Solivan & Dirty Kitchen, and James Thomas, bass player with the Satyr Hill Band, were involved in a scene in the movie.
We’ll see them playing at a point where their characters are performing at a college radio station. David told us that they spoke some lines in the shoot, but don’t know yet what may make it into the final edit.
Mike and David also recorded some background music for the project.
