Southern Legacy is a band made up of bluegrass music superstars, including award-winners Don Rigsby, Josh Williams, Mike Anglin, Ron Block, and Steve Thomas.
On Monday night, February 9, they were the band heard around the world as the featured band in this week’s WoodSongs Old Time Radio Hour, hosted by Micheal Johnathon.
WoodSongs is an all-volunteer produced, audience celebration of grassroots music and the artists who make it. The program is aired on 514 public radio and TV stations all around the world in 177 different countries. The show also broadcasts all over the world to all of our military bases and ships at sea.
Southern Legacy put on an outstanding performance that included their recent hit song, Hills of Carter County, along with cuts from their most recent project that will soon be released.
WoodSongs also has a segment called WoodSongs Kids that features a young person with a special talent. This week’s Kid came to the show from Malvern, OH, a 15 year old fiddle player named Owen Hoopes. Owen started playing the fiddle at age five, being classically trained in his younger years, but now makes bluegrass music his passion.
He, like most young players, gives thanks to his parents, Tiffany and Matt, for their support. Owen played an amazing fiddle solo before being joined on the banjo by Ron Block of Southern Legacy, and then the entire Southern Legacy band.

It was a great night of bluegrass at WoodSongs’ new home, The Lexington Scottish Rite Concert Hall. Keep an eye on your public radio and TV listings to see when this episode will air in your area, or you can watch the full February 9 program below.
